| In
1985 the Toyota Motor company shocked the automotive
community by building yet another great sports car.
This time it was called the MR2, a lightweight 2 seat
mid engine screamer with the chassis code AW11, the
car had great looks and the performance to back it
up. Powered by a 1.6 liter 16 valve 4 cylinder motor
mounted behind the driver like a true racecar, the
MR2 was an instant success with performance enthusiasts.
The
dual overhead cam 4AGE engine produced 115hp and 108lb/ft
of torque, and the factory redline was set at a lofty
7500rpm. The motor's mid chassis placement combined
with the cars lightness allow for swift acceleration
and a killer holeshot. The suspension was handled
with MacPherson struts at all four corners, and braking
is by 4 wheel discs. The last of this first generation
MR2 was sold in 1989. There was a supercharged model
of the car offered in 1988 and 1989 that boasted 145
horsepower and mid 15 second 1/4 mile times. |
