The
Second Generation (MK2) 1982-1986 Celica Supra is powered by
a twin cam 2.8 liter inline six cylinder engine. This was the
first Supra to offer true performance oriented hardware. It
was named "Import Car of The Year" in 1982 and regularly
won comparison tests with other Sports GT cars of its day including
its main rival the Nissan Z-Car. It featured Lotus designed
four wheel independent suspension with macpherson struts up
front and trailing arms in the rear.
Four
wheel vented disc brakes could be found on all 4 corners. The
rear wheels are driven by either a 5 speed close ratio manual
or 4 speed electronically controlled automatic transmission,
power is distributed using a clutch type limited slip differential
(LSD). Amenities included automatic climate control, Recaro
sport seats, power door locks, power windows and sliding sunroof,
rack & pinion steering, and 14"x7" alloy wheels.
Easy
to read full analog instrumentation adds to the sporty nature
of the car. This particular body style is 500-800 pounds lighter
than the later model Supra's making it very fun to drive and
fast even though in stock form it appears to be greatly lacking
in power. For those wishing to have the best of both worlds
the engine takes well to all kinds of bolt on power adders as
simple as a high flow intake all the way to a full blown turbo
setup.
