All
of the adjustable shocks that were made for the MK2 Supra
have been discontinued years ago, however there is still hope.
With a little modification the rear struts from a second generation
MR2 will work quite well. I chose to use the KYB AGX brand
however Koni offers a top adjustable shock for this application
also. The struts offer approximately and inch less travel
over the stock shocks, however on a car with higher rate springs
and swaybar the extra inch of travel is really not necessary.
The part number for these struts is 765016.
The upper
mount of these struts will fit exactly like stock with no
modifications whatsoever. The bottom of the strut tube will
need to have spacers added to make up for the difference in
length between the MR2 Struts and the stock Supra struts.
The easiest way to do this is with some large washers. A trip
to my local home improvement center yielded 1- 3/4" diameter
washers that I used. I purchased a bag of 25 for ~$5.
I has to grind a little material
off of the edge of the washers in order to get them to slide
smoothly down into the strut tube. Once you have them fitting
nicely it helps to use a dowel to help the washers slide straight
down the tube, if you don't have a dowel it may take a little
trial land error to make them get all the way to the bottom
flat. Keep sliding washers down the tube and test fitting
the strut until you have enough to properly secure the strut
with your original nut. It took 6 or 7 washers to get the
right fit on mine. Once you have it fitting right tighten
down the upper nut well and reassemble your struts. Don't
forget to reinstall the bump stops, they will keep you from
damaging your new struts just in case you ever do bottom them
out. Here is a picture of them on the car with the adjuster
knob sticking out of the top of the strut mount. These shocks
have 4 levels of adjustment. Setting number 1 gives a very
firm ride and by the time you get to number 4 it is hard as
a rock.
